Lower Granite Dam

The Project

The Lower Granite Dam underwent successful construction and renovation, resulting in improved water management and flood control capabilities.

The Solution

Pacific Foundation performed geotechnical work, including foundation stabilization, pile installation, and ground improvement at the Lower Granite Dam.

The Result

The completed project at Lower Granite Dam provides enhanced water management, improved flood control, and increased stability for long-term sustainability.

Objective

The Lower Granite Dam project, undertaken by West Coast Contractors, involved the construction and renovation of the dam structure. Challenges included working in a remote location and managing water flow during construction. The delivered product is a reinforced and improved dam that enhances water management and flood control while supporting hydroelectric power generation.

This project included installation of thirty-two 54″ diameter drilled shafts with 48″ diameter rock sockets using sectional casing and oscillators, half of which were installed over water from work trestles. Each of the shafts required permanent casing that penetrated into R4-R5 basalt bedrock. The casing was installed by first driving it into bedrock, then using a casing oscillator to cut through the rock to provide a seal. We also installed 62” diameter shafts to depths of 75 feet from a barge deck using our Bauer BG40 drill rig.  The project also included 12 permanent micropile anchors embedded into rock to anchor a 15-foot diameter mooring dolphin.
